What is Tokyo
in Tulsa?
TnT is an anime convention but also so much more. There is so
much to do during the 3 days of TnT: Panels, Arts and Crafts, Contests, Games,
Venders, Signings, and Concerts. They even have a manga (graphic novels) library
and viewing room.
a.
There are two kinds of panels; funny and
educational. In the funny panels people dress up as characters, also known as
cosplaying, and either answer questions from the audience or do silly skits. It
is very entertaining. The educational panels have more to do with what goes
into making an anime. In 2016, I went to an Adaptive Writing panel hosted by J
Michael Tatum and learned quite a bit about the adaptive writing prosses. It
wasn’t dull or boring like a class you’re forced to take. He made it
entertaining as well.
b.
The arts and crafts is exactly what it sounds
like. People make stuff, most of it by hand, and sell it at TnT. You can buy
fanart, nick-knacks, whatnots, and other things you most likely don’t need but
are too cute so you buy anyways.
c.
At TnT there seems to be a contest for almost
everything. They have best cosplay, amateur art, AMV (anime music video), and
manga contests. There are probably more than that, but that’s all I can
remember.
d.
There is a gaming side at TnT as well. They have
it set up were you can play games on various gaming-consoles. I believe
Gamestop was giving demonstrations on new games and consoles. I’m not a gamer
so I really don’t know much about this, but some friends of my spent a lot of
time in this part of TnT.
e.
There are a lot of venders. Booths everywhere,
for everything. There was a barns and nobles book with lots of manga, a
FUNimation booth selling DVDs and t-shirts, many other booths selling plushies,
keychains, and other merchandise.
f.
At the signings, I think they called it the Meet
and Greet, you can get autographs and take pictures with the voice actors,
bands, and other guests.
g.
The concerts were Jpop (Japanese pop) and
dance/electric. It was good and they sounded great. The bands were scheduled
toward the end of the night and they were popular bands, at least among the
people there. They were MetreoiD and Chanty
h.
The manga library was large. It was just like other
libraries except only manga. There were couches and comfy looking chairs to
read on. I believe there were even desks and tables to read at also.
i.
The viewing room was set up kind of like a movie
theater. A movie or episode was projected on a wall. I think they had a list of
things to watch and there was a group vote on what would be played. I didn’t
know about this until I stumbled upon it the last day and I will investigate it
more when I return this summer.
2016 Map/ Schedule of TnT
2 I would highly recommend any anime fans near
Tulsa, OK to attend Tokyo in Tulsa. It was such a fun experience. Even If you’re
not a huge fan of anime there are things for you to do; like gaming. There were
other non-anime fandoms there like Supernatural and Doctor Who- they show up
everywhere. There were vendors that weren’t anime related; like sarcastic
t-shirts and mugs. If your anime friend asks you to go to TnT and you’re
thinking you won’t have fun, say yes. You will definitely find something you
like.

3 This event helps boost the economy. People are
staying at hotels, going out to eat, visiting the surrounding areas, some may
even fly in for the event. This event helps Tulsa’s economy. Anime fans want to
go to conventions. If TnT wasn’t there we would take our money to a different
one.

If you want to eat
out then I would suggest somewhere cheap so you can spend more money at TnT. If
you have a lot of money, though, go somewhere expensive- I hear most “expensive
food” taste better. I personally just brought stuff for sandwiches.
